Naomi Roseth, our Choir Secretary, is visiting Europe. An recent incident made her realise how much the St John Passion is still deeply ingrained in her psyche.
The tour started in Bulgaria and stopped at a small town called Arbanassi to look at a charming, much frescoed 17th century chapel nicknamed the Bulgarian Sistine Chapel. The tour guide turned out to be the secretary of a male voice choir, and had a pleasant tenor voice. In the Chapel he said that he would sing a prayer song, which he did. Naomi then spotted an Icon of St John, and was moved to sing the last Chorale of the St John Passion, which she can still do from memory. She said that the music is still such a part of her, and that the experience was very moving for everyone.
